Shepherd Sam's Friend, Mr. Pockets

Today we're introducing one of Shepherd Sam's oldest and dearest friends—Mr. Pockets!

Every morning, just after sunrise, Mr. Pockets whistles his way down the lane to help Shepherd Sam care for the animals. With his oversized pockets full of treats, tools, and surprises, he's always ready to lend a helping hand. But the greatest thing he carries isn't found in his pockets at all. It's the kindness in his heart.

Hello my friends. I'm Shepherd Sam and welcome to my farm. Baxter and I love having visitors come spend time with us. Every day is a new adventure, and we're so glad you're here. Come on, Baxter, let's go see what our farm friends are up to today.

Have you ever had a really good friend? You know, the kind of friend who's always there when you need a helping hand. But today I'd like you to meet one of my very best friends. His name is Mr Pockets. Now that's not his real name, but around here everybody calls him Mr. Pockets. You know why? Because he always has the biggest pockets you've ever seen. And you never know what wonderful things might be tucked inside them.

Every morning, just after the sun begins to shine across the pasture, I hear someone whistling as he walks up the lane. Before I see him I know exactly who it is. It's my good friend Mr. Pockets. We've been friends for many years. Almost every morning he comes over to help me care for the farm before he heads home for the day. He's one of those friends you can always count on. If a fence needs fixing or animals need feeding, mister Pockets is always there. And if someone needs encouragement, you'll usually find mister Pockets with a smile and a kind word. He has a heart that's just as big as those wonderful pockets, and that says something.

Hello, mister Pockets. Good morning, Sam. Looks like God has given us another beautiful day.

Mr. Pockets 2:02

He sure has. Ready to start another wonderful day? I've been ready since breakfast. And these animals look like they're ready for breakfast too.

Shepherd Sam 2:13

So what do you have tucked away in those pockets today? Let me see. A few carrots, some corn, a dog treat, and a bandage. And I think I even packed a bunch of kindness. Well that's one thing we never want to forget.

Mr. Pockets 2:34

Y es, Shepard Sam, kindness doesn't take up much room, but it sure makes a big difference. And even though I have big pockets with lots of treats for my friends, I never run out of kindness. You see, kindness doesn't come from my pockets. It comes from my heart.

Shepherd Sam 2:55

You see, that's what makes you special, mister Pockets. It isn't really what's inside a pocket, it's what's inside our heart. Sometimes children come to visit Shepherd Sam's farm. They enjoy helping feed and take care of the animals and spending time with all our farm friends. Mr Pockets loves having young helpers around the farm.

Mr Pockets, you just reminded me of something the Bible says. It says be kind to one another. God has blessed every one of us with different ways we can be kind and help others. And you reminded me that every act of kindness matters, and kind hearts make happy farms.

Oh, I hear Baxter barking. I think he's reminding me to read the letter we received from Tommy in Tennessee. Let me read it for you.

Dear Shepherd Sam, is there a song you sing to welcome visitors to Shepherd Sam's farm? Tommy, thank you for that wonderful question. You know, every happy farm ought to have a welcome song. So I'm going to put on my thinking cap and get together with mister Pockets and all my farm friends. We'll come up with just the right song for Shepherd Sam's farm. And then when you come back to visit the farm next week, we'll sing it together for the very first time. I hope you'll be ready to sing with us.
